How We Research and Pick Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes

Last updated October 19, 2026

Litter Box Picks is a research-based review site. This page explains exactly how our picks are made, so you can decide how much weight to give them.

Who's behind Litter Box Picks

Every guide is written by the Litter Box Picks Review Team. The site is independently run by a cat owner, so the questions we dig into are the ones that matter at home: noise at night, how often the drawer really needs emptying, and whether a box suits more than one cat.

What we have and haven't done

  • We have not tested these machines hands-on. No article on this site says "we tested" or "in our testing" unless we later buy and test a unit. If we do, that article will say which unit, when, and how.
  • We do not invent measurements. Every number on the site (price, size, weight, cat limits, drawer capacity, noise) comes from a source we link. If we can't find a source, the cell is blank or says "not published."
  • Where hands-on testing would change the answer, we say so. Those spots are marked in our drafts and will become real tests if we start testing.

Our sources, in order of trust

  1. Manufacturer documentation: product pages, user manuals and support articles. These are the most reliable source for specs like weight limits and entry sizes. We treat performance claims ("whisper quiet", "4x odor control") as claims, not facts.
  2. Independent hands-on reviewers: publications that bought or borrowed and ran the machines, such as Wirecutter. We quote their findings and credit them by name and link. We never present their testing as ours.
  3. Veterinary and behavior sources: the Cornell Feline Health Center, the ASPCA and the AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines, for how many boxes you need, placement, and warning signs.
  4. Owner reports: reviews and forum threads. We say what kind each one is:
    • Reviews on a manufacturer's own site are first-party and may be curated. We use them as examples, never as a sample.
    • Independent owner write-ups (for example, a long-term blog review) are one person's experience. We say so.
    • Forum threads (Reddit r/litterrobot, r/CatAdvice, r/cats, r/PETKIT and others): when we've read a thread, we summarize it with counts ("4 of 9 threads…") and links. When we could only see a thread's title, we say "a thread titled…" and make no claims about what it contains.
    • We don't show Amazon star ratings or Amazon prices.

How we compare noise

Manufacturers publish decibel figures without saying how far away, which weighting, or in what room, so those numbers can't be ranked against each other. We show them as claims, alongside any independent measurement we can cite, and we say when two sources disagree. If we start testing, our noise protocol will be: a Class 2 sound level meter, A-weighted, slow response, 1 m from the front of the unit at 1 m height, background level logged, three full cycles averaged, raw readings published.

How we choose picks

For each guide we score candidates on:

  1. Fit: the published cat weight range, cat count, entry size and height, and interior size against the household the guide is for.
  2. Capacity per cat: we convert single-cat drawer claims into per-cat estimates and label them as our arithmetic.
  3. Independent evidence: whether a credible reviewer has tested the model hands-on, and what they found.
  4. Safety record: designs linked to injuries or deaths, or with unresolved safety reports, are excluded or flagged.
  5. Support: trial length, warranty, replacement parts and subscription costs.

Our dataset

We keep a master spreadsheet of every model we track, with a source URL for every figure. The current version is dated Oct 19, 2026 and covers 20 models. Download the dataset (CSV). The 20-model side-by-side table is on our best self-cleaning litter boxes page.

How we make money

We earn commissions when you buy through links marked "paid link," at no extra cost to you. Rates differ by retailer and brand (Amazon pays 3% on pet products, and some brands pay more), but commissions never decide our picks. Several of our picks come from brands whose programs we haven't joined. See our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections and updates

Prices and specs change. Each guide shows the date we last checked it. If you find an error, tell us and we'll fix it and note the change.
